Safety Trainers

Safety Trainers

Safety trainers are perfect for most warehouse workers and light manufacturing roles, they look and wear just like a conventional trainer but have added features that make them more protective. Toe protection is the first item that is present in many of these shoes, ensuring that dropped items don't result in broken toes. Measurable anti-slip and anti-static qualities are also essential for lots of roles and ensure that you stay on your feet and in comfort all day long.

  • About Safety Trainers

Safety Trainers are a lighter alternative to traditional work boots for protecting feet. Although they don’t offer ankle protection like a normal work boot, they are typically more flexible and comfortable when worn in the right environments.

Safety shoes and trainers must conform with EN ISO 20345:2021 for safety footwear, meaning that, at the very least, their toe protection must have 200 joules of impact resistance and withstand 15KN of compression (equivalent to 1.5 tonnes).

Depending on your work environment and industry, you may need other forms of protection beyond the basic toe and compression resistance. The best safety trainers provide other safety features like slip-resistance, water-resistant uppers and puncture-resistant midsoles, which must also conform with EN ISO 20345:2021 safety footwear regulations to be used legally on-site in the UK. These extra protections can make work safety trainers more desirable than boots for certain environments, such as warehouses and other indoor work environments, work in warmer temperatures, and jobs requiring agility and movement, like delivery service roles and maintenance roles that involve climbing. Site safety trainers are also perfect for roles that involve operating machinery with foot controls, like forklift drivers.

    Water-resistant Safety Trainers

Water-resistant safety trainers offer additional protection from water infiltration as well as the comfort and safety expected from quality safety footwear, making them ideal for wet or rainy conditions.

    Composite Toe Cap Safety Trainers

This range of safety footwear uses a lightweight, composite toe cap instead of the more traditional steel. They are still rated to conform with EN ISO 20345:2021; however, they may not be as hard-wearing as a steel toe.

    Slip-on Safety Trainers

Like the dealer boot, many comfortable safety trainer styles are designed to be slipped on and off while still providing the protection necessary to conform with EN ISO 20345:2021. This trainer style is great for environments where workers must frequently or quickly remove their shoes.

    Women's Safety Trainers

Safety trainers for ladies follow women's sizing standards, offering a comfortable and protective fit for ladies. They provide the same robust protection and durability as men's safety footwear, making them ideal for the same demanding work environments.

What Makes A Good Pair Of Safety Trainers?

Before choosing the best safety footwear, refer to a risk assessment of your place of work to consider the risks that need to be mitigated when working in that environment:

    Compliance With Standards

If you require safety trainers with additional protective features (in addition to toe protection), make sure they also conform to the standards set out by EN ISO 20345:2021 to be usable on-site in the UK. This refers to features like slip resistance, antistatic properties, water penetration absorption resistance, and penetration-resistant midsoles.

    Comfort

Your footwear will support your full weight for over 8 hours a day, so comfort and support from day 1 are the most important factors to look for.

    Style

A large part of buying a pair of safety trainers is the style. You may want to find a pair that matches your company branding, or that simply looks modern and sleek rather than bulky and cumbersome.

    Water Resistance & Slip Resistance

Do you work in an environment prone to water? Consider trainers with a water-resistant upper and high slip ratings. These features have their own EN ISO 20345:2021 ratings.

    Reinforced Toes

In order to be worn on-site in the UK, safety shoes must adhere to EN ISO 20345:2021, providing 200 Joule of resistance.

    Midsole Foot Protection

Do you need to protect the bottom of your foot? According to EN ISO 20345, which covers midsole protection standards, footwear midsoles must resist a penetration force of 1100N. This is done with either steel or aluminium inserts or a more comfortable Kevlar insole.
