    Our range of hearing protection devices would not be complete without ear defenders. These over-ear protectors help reduce the risk of hearing problems caused by working in a noisy environment.

    We offer models with varying levels of protection, so you can wear the appropriate level for the job at hand. Choose between helmet-mounted variants and standalone ear protectors, ensuring they don't interfere with the fit of your other PPE items.

    Who uses ear defenders? They're commonly used by maintenance workers in plant rooms with noisy pumps, fans, and blowers, and IT technicians in server rooms where hundreds of fans are used to keep electrical equipment racks cool.

    Tree surgeons use chainsaws and strimmers powered by loud 2-stroke motors, while construction and demolition workers often work with hammering or cutting equipment that exposes them to damaging noise levels. Both roles need over-ear hearing protectors.

    How do ear defenders work?

    Ear defenders cover the whole of the ear in an ear cup, which includes acoustic foam sound insulation to reduce the amount of sound that makes its way to the ear drum. 

    For the ear defenders to work correctly, the ear pads must make a tight seal against the head. It’s important to note that long hair, woolly hats, and even safety glasses can impact the noise-cancelling abilities of the hearing protection.

    What are the best ear defenders for my role?

    This depends on the individual tasks you carry out and the level of noise you’re exposed to. If you wear a helmet for work, you’ll need a helmet-mounted pair of ear defenders, specifically ones compatible with your helmet. If not, standard "headband" ear defenders will be perfect for you.

    What level of noise protection do I need?

    All our ear defenders come with an SNR rating to indicate the reduction in dB levels. For example, an SNR of 32 in a 110dB environment would bring your exposure level down to 78dB. You want to reduce the sound level to below 85dB - but not below 75dB, which would mean you couldn’t hear hazards around you. Find more information here and on the HSE website.
