Road Plates

Road Plates

When a trench has to cross a road, it causes no end of traffic and frustration for motorists when the road also has to close, which is where road plates come in. Available in a modular configuration as well as traditional steel plate formats, these excavation coverings ensure that all road legal vehicles can safely make their way over the excavation. This saves on the costs of traffic management delays and makes the whole job run smoother for everyone involved.

  • About Road Plates

We stock a great selection of road plats suitable for use on public roads. They allow traffic to continue flowing while utility works are being carried out, bridging trenches and avoiding significant delays that diverting traffic to an alternative route often causes.

We specialise in supplying anti-slip road plates that feature high traction surfaces for vehicles and cars, ensuring you do not leave yourself exposed to unnecessary risk. You will also find that most of our road plates are modular, making them highly portable, lightweight, and quieter than their steel counterparts.

We stock the road plates for sale on our website, ensuring that when you order them, they can be delivered quickly to your job site and keep traffic flowing. As our road plates are designed with both pedestrian and vehicle traffic in mind, they are ideal for deployment in town centres and villages while gas main upgrades, water, or telecom works are being carried out on buried utilities.

How much does a road plate weigh?

This depends on the type of road plate you are purchasing. Our composite road plates are light enough that each section can be lifted by two workers, removing the requirement for specialist lifting equipment on site.

    What is a road plate?

If you are asking yourself, “What are road plates?” then here is the answer. A road plate is a piece of equipment used normally as a temporary solution to ensure that traffic can continue to flow whilst works are being carried out. They come in many forms, from anti-skid steel road plates to composite modern plates that can easily be moved without a crane or heavy lifting equipment.

Key Considerations When Purchasing A Road Plate

There are a few key points to keep in mind when you buy road plates, otherwise, you may end up with a product that is not suitable for the task. There are a few key points to keep in mind when you buy road plates, otherwise, you may end up with a product that is not suitable for the task.

    Trench Span

Check the span of your trench and find a plate with a suitable bridging width for that excavation.

    Vehicle Weight

What weight of vehicles are passing over the excavation and plate? Most plates are suitable for use with “common” road traffic so can be used without putting vehicle restrictions in place.

    Location

Will this be used on pavement, road or driveway? For pavements and driveways, we have a great selection of trench covers and driveway boards.

    Noise

If you are installing the plate in an area with any residential properties, strongly consider a composite plate over a steel one, as steel plates can clang and bang as traffic passes over them.

    Lifting Equipment

Do you have lifting equipment on site? If not then you should look for a lightweight or modular solution. Steel plates require a crane on site due to their heavy weight.

    Transportation costs

If you need to keep transportation costs down, keep in mind that weight is often the limit for transportation vehicles.

    Traction

Look for a plate with an anti-skid surface; this is usually achieved by moulding a traction pattern into a composite plate or, in the case of steel road plates, by adding a grit bound in resin to the surface of the plate.
