Dust & Face Mask Filters

Dust & Face Mask Filters

If your RPE has removable face mask filters, it's essential that you replace them when required to ensure you’re getting the proper levels of protection. These filters can also be used to change the level of filtration your mask offers. How often you should replace your filters depends on how saturated the environment is and how long you use them for. • About Dust & Face Mask Filters

Our wide range of respirator cartridge filters will get your get your full face, half face and powered air respirator back on track once the filters have expired. All our filters are made by the original manufacturer, ensuring the quality, fit, and, most importantly, filtration standards are up to scratch.

These dust mask filters come in various styles and filtration standards, from particulate filters to catch fine particles such as fibreglass and brick dust, to filters that can protect against organic vapours and inorganic gases.

Since dust facemask filters are disposable items, they will need frequent replacing. The good news is that replacement filter cartridges are relatively inexpensive and last far longer than disposable masks, while many filters have a plastic housing to protect the filter elements from damage.

Disposable filters are also interchangeable. For instance, if your role involves working with various materials, you may need particulate filtration one day and a mask that filters inorganic gases the next. Interchangeable face mask filters save you the cost of buying a whole new mask assembly for every task.

Note: Carry out a full risk assessment before using any mask with filters, alongside a face-fit test performed by a qualified person.

    Filter colours & ratings

You’ll notice that most replacement respiratory filters in this range are colour coded. Here’s what the colours mean:

A - Brown: Suitable for filtering out organic vapours and gases with boiling points greater than 65°C.
B - Grey: Can be used with inorganic gases and vapours such as chlorine. Not suitable for use with carbon monoxide.
E - Yellow: Filters sulphur dioxide and other acidic gases such as hydrogen chloride.
K - Green: Use with ammonia and organic ammonia derivatives.
P - White: A white stripe or pure white filter housing indicates that the filter is suitable for use with solid and liquid hazards, including radioactive particles.

Filters are also marked with numbers indicating their efficiency at filtering out particles: P1 , P2, or P3. Their performance depends on the mask you use them with.

    Expiry dates

All mask filter cartridges are marked with an expiry date. This is not an indication of how long the filter can be used - it’s the last possible date you can start using it. Filters can be stored until this date, but once opened, they must be used within a set time limit (because the moisture content of the air reduces their efficacy).

Key respirator filter cartridge types and features

Before you buy replacement filters for your mask, consider the following useful information:

    PressToCheck™

This feature is exclusive to JSP products. It allows you to check quickly that your filters and mask are forming a tight seal around your face. More information on this system can be found on our product pages.

    Encased filters

Most respirator cartridge filter replacements feature a plastic housing that protects the inner filter medium from impacts and other environmental hazards.

    Exposed filters

A few “compact” filter models do away with protective housings; this shrinks their size and can be useful for environments that are exceptionally dirty, where you need to replace filters daily.

    Traditional filters

Depending on the brand, these can have a number of names, including “Classic”. You can block off these filters with the palm of a hand to help check the face-fit of the mask before each use.

    Valved filters

Be sure to purchase filters with a one-way valve fitted where possible. This valve prevents your exhaled breath from moistening the filter medium, which would degrade its performance.

    Colour coding

Most filters in this range are colour-coded to help you quickly identify the right filter for the job, making sure that you do not inadvertently equip the wrong filter with insufficient filtration.
