Prevent accidents and improve workplace wellbeing

Whether you work in an office, a factory, or a warehouse, keeping everyone and everything safe is essential to the wellbeing of staff and the long-term viability of a business.

If you keep losing critical machinery to preventable accidents, or essential staff members to slips, trips, or other mishaps, your escalating insurance bills will be the least of your worries.

Below we have detailed some of the easiest ways to increase safety and the wellbeing of your staff, improving productivity, morale, and profitability in the long term.

Manage pedestrians

Ensure that pedestrians are managed, and where possible keep them away from vehicles.

Creating orderly queues using retractable barriers can ensure exits and entranceways are kept clear.

You can use walkway railing sets to ensure that pedestrians do not stray into the path of oncoming vehicles and lifting equipment. Proper guard rails can also keep pedestrians away from dangerous equipment.

Close off areas that are undergoing maintenance, keeping staff and visitors well away from unexpected unfinished surfaces or trip hazards.

Provide guidance

Workplace signage is easy to implement telling people where the exit routes are, where safety equipment is located, and what to do in the event of an emergency.

Ensure that any high-risk areas, such as a warehouse where forklifts may be operating, have the proper PPE signage warning. Anyone who enters the area can see that they should be wearing toe protectors and hi-vis clothing, and that they should expect vehicle traffic.

Improve visibility

Blind spots can be found in almost every workplace and public area, from offices to car parks to hospitals. These blind corners can lead to people walking into each other - or, worse, walking out in front of vehicles or heavy equipment.

Convex mirrors at blind spots allow pedestrians to see around corners, and drivers to peer into blind spots. There are variants suitable for warehouse ceilings, narrow corridors, prisons, narrow driveways, and more, all enabling better situational awareness for avoiding collisions and accidents.

Improve security

Some businesses, such as shops and banks that handle cash or expensive merchandise, pose more of a risk for security than other workplaces.

Placing mirrors at strategic locations can help staff see into a blind spot before proceeding, or see if they are being followed.

Zone off areas

Ensure that areas with different purposes are clearly marked. In warehouses this can be done by painting the floor or using colour-coded tapes.

This allows you to mark areas where exit routes are located, so that everyone knows they must be kept free and not obstructed by stock or packing materials.

Pedestrian areas can also be zoned off, helping to separate vehicles and pedestrians wherever possible.

Prevent slips and trips

Taking preventative measures is always a better step than being reactive.

If there are areas that are prone to slip risks, install a high-traction surface to improve grip. This could be in the form of sticky grip tapes, high-traction stair nosing, or skid-resistant floor paints.

Always ensure that cleaning staff deploy a "wet floor" warning system when cleaning or mopping.

Protect your assets

Sometimes the layout of a property dictates that machinery or buildings be placed in vulnerable locations.

By installing suitable guide rails, bollards, and hoop barriers, you can ensure that any miscalculation by a delivery driver or forklift operator does not result in a costly repair bill and a production outage.

Store chemicals safely

Store dangerous chemicals and cleaning substances in suitable locked cabinets, ensuring they are out of reach of people who are not trained on how to use them.

Most chemical and hazardous substance lockers contain leak control systems to catch spilt fluids or materials, ensuring they don't cause further damage.

Be prepared

No matter how hard you try, some accidents will happen. It is essential that you are prepared for what might happen , in order to keep your staff and any visitors safe.

Ensure that appropriate first aid kits are located strategically around the building, at the ready in case something goes wrong.

To counteract the potential damage of a fire, make sure that adequate fire extinguishers are within easy reach - and that staff are trained on how to use them.
