    Potholes are typically caused by our wet, cold winters. During wet weather, any defects and cracks in tarmac and asphalt surfaces fill up with water. The water expands when it freezes, widening the cracks. 

    This freeze-thaw process repeats until the surface is brittle and breaks away under road traffic, especially heavy vehicles like HGVs. This is why you see so many potholes immediately after a cold winter. 

    Although potholes are an unfortunate inevitability, there are steps you can take to prevent them from getting established - as well as fixing them quickly and effectively when they do appear.

    Prevention

    Prevention is better than cure! If you can stop a pothole from getting started in the first place, it takes less time, money, and material than fixing an established pothole - especially on the public highway.

    Our pothole prevention products include ColdFix, a sealant designed to fix small cracks in their infancy and prevent them from turning into potholes. You can also tackle small defects with a Surface Defect Repair kit.

    Potholes often form around recent utility reinstatement works, as water seeps into the join between old and new material. HAPAS-approved thermoplastic overbanding tape or a sealant spray will seal the joins and prevent future surface failure. 

    Repair

    Once it has already formed, even a small pothole will quickly become much deeper as vehicles drive over it. Fast repair is essential to prevent it from getting worse, and to minimise traffic disruption.

    ViaFix Pothole Repair Kits are ideal for the job, as they require no tools and almost zero prep work. The compound sets in minutes and can be deployed in wet weather. Best of all, the repair is long-lasting.

    You can use Surface Defect Repair to fix large delaminations (although not deep holes), while using sealants or overbanding tape around new pothole repairs will seal the seam and improve the durability of the road surface.
