Case Study: Using Road Markings to Maintain Fire Escape Access at ACDC Drives

Overview

ACDC Drives is a supplier of automation equipment with a warehouse in Worcestershire. They approached Start Safety UK for an affordable line marking solution that would prevent neighbouring units from parking inappropriately around their property, causing safety issues.

The Challenge

Like many business parks, the location of the ACDC Drives distribution warehouse has a shortage of parking, meaning that visitors and staff members will often park wherever they can find a space, whether this is a nuisance to someone else is often not a consideration. ACDC Drives found that their main fire exit was blocked frequently by vehicles from other units and came to Start Safety seeking a cost-effective solution.

The Solution

Having searched online ACDC Drives realised that Start Safety not only have a great reputation for supplying quality items, but are also located locally to them. They quickly picked up the phone, and we were able to arrange a site visit to see how we could help.

“It was nice to see how responsive Start Safety were to our enquiry, they had one of their team on site with us within a couple of hours to see how they could help”, Steve outlined.

Once on site, it was obvious what the issue was: the existing markings were not clear enough, making it appear that the space was a parking area rather than a prohibited area.

“Start Safety suggested we look at their thermoplastic line marking product as a solution. They indicated that adding yellow diagonal markings to the area in front of our fire exit doors would indicate to drivers that they should not park there as they resemble a yellow box junction”. Steve continued.

The Outcome

ACDC Drives placed an order for some rolls of thermoplastic tape in yellow, alongside primer and a gas torch to heat the markings up. 

“The markings were surprisingly easy to install. We did have a few questions once everything was delivered, but these were quickly answered by the team at Start Safety, allowing us to get on with the job” said Steve.

The result has been that ACDC Drives can now open their fire escape doors without first having to locate the driver of an abandoned vehicle. This has not only improved convenience but has also significantly enhanced the safety of the building by restoring a fire escape to full functionality.
