Generally speaking longer screws are, so choose a screw that is not too long that it will go all the way through the substrate causing a hazard on the underside. For example on decking you would not want to use a 40mm screw that will protrude 20 mm below the deck, especially if the underside of the deck is accessible.

Finish:

When choosing a finish, lacquered black and lacquered yellow are great for use on yellow or black surfaces as they blend in neatly.

When choosing between gold (passivated yellow) and zinc plated screws, the different is both aesthetic and to do with durability. Gold screws will give better performance in outdoor and humid environments where they will reisst any corrosion better.
