  • About Retractable Inertia Reel Fall Arrestors

Retractable fall arrester blocks feature an inertia reel in a rugged plastic housing, around which a long lanyard is wound. The user is anchored to the lanyard, and the reel block steadily releases and retracts it as required.

However, in the event of a fall, the lifeline locks up in much the same way as a car seatbelt, preventing the wearer from falling any further. A retractable lanyard will always try to stay as short as possible, so there’s no need for constant adjustment.

Retractable lifelines have many use cases. You can place them at the top of a ladder so that workers can safely ascend and descend, or suspend them from the ceiling of a factory or hangar to prevent workers falling from machinery. They can also be anchored to a floor or wall in areas with no overhead structure.

The ability to quickly catch falls also makes these retractable type fall arresters ideal for use in areas with limited fall space, which would rule out using a traditional shock absorber fall arrest lanyard.

    Key features & considerations

Consider the material ( the lifeline section can be made from either wire rope or fabric webbing) and the size and weight of the block, and ensure you have suitable connectors to attach the block properly to the anchor point. You may need additional slings to fit the block into position safely.

Here are some key features to consider:

    • Shock absorbers: These are primarily found on fall-limiting blocks with a horizontal functionality.
    • Fall indicators: These trigger in the event of a fall, indicating that the device needs servicing or replacing.
    • Carry handles: Some larger fall limiters have convenient carry handles positioned on the sides.
    • Winch fitting: Some fall protection blocks have integrated winches, which can be used in rescue operations to raise or lower incapacitated workers.
    • Serviceability: You can send many of our blocks for servicing to renew their inner workings, ensuring they’re safe for further use. Remember that you still need to inspect your fall arrest block before each use, as you would with all fall equipment.

Retractable inertia reel fall arresters can be used in conjunction with other items in our fall protection range, such as safety harnesses and fall rescue equipment.
