Directional Signs

Directional Signs

Directional signage ensures that road users know where they are going. Made from high-quality reflective materials, these signs can be seen easily in car headlights even in the depths of winter. Often highlighting local tourist attractions or points of interest - or diverting traffic away from roadworks - these signs are an essential part of the road infrastructure. About Directional Signs

Directional signs are essential for guiding traffic around the country - without them, anyone driving without a sat nav would be lost. These signs often include place names, road numbers, and diagrams for roundabouts, but this category also includes "Keep Left/Right" and "Turn Left/Right" signs, as well as signage for temporary diversions.

Road directional signs come in several different formats:

  • Shaped direction signs: These signs are arrow-shaped at one end, indicating the  direction in which drivers should travel.
  • Rectangular signs: These often include the directions to multiple sites or specific roads (for example, the nearest motorway), or feature an arrow symbol.
  • Diagram-based direction signs: Used on roundabouts or junctions to inform road users which exit to take to get to their destination.

Permanent direction signs can be mounted in many ways but are most commonly mounted to signposts. Temporary signs attach easily to metal or plastic frames.

It's simple and easy to buy direction signs with arrows online. For more complex signs (for instance, those with junction diagrams) we recommend emailing us for a full quotation.

Types of directional signs

You will find directional signs all over the UK road network as well as on large industrial estates, university campuses, and hospitals. Directional signs come in various different colours, depending on their context and target audience.

  • Blue: Indicates that the sign relates to motorway traffic. Used on motorways or to give directions to a motorway.
  • Green: Green signs are used on primary routes, which are mostly A-roads.
  • White: These are for non-primary routes, and can include sub-areas of green or blue.
  • Black: Used for directing heavy-duty traffic such as HGVs along appropriate routes to industrial estates and sites.
  • Brown: These are directions for local tourist routes or attractions.
  • Yellow: Used to divert traffic to a temporary alternative route.
  • Red: Temporary signs to direct pedestrians safety around roadworks.

Some directional signs will even include sub diagrams to indicate where certain types of traffic are prohibited.
