All Vehicles Prohibited Sign Face Post Mounted Regulatory Sign 617 (Face Only)

The No Vehicles sign is a blank regulatory sign to diagram 617 which restricts access to an area for all mechanical transport (including cycles and horse-drawn vehicles). For producing a one-way system, Diagram 615- "Priority Vehicles from Other Direction" will indicate priority for oncoming traffic or 811- "Priority Over Oncoming Traffic" will give priority over oncoming traffic.

You will usually see this on play or shopping streets closed to vehicles and cycles. The sign should always be used with a supplementary sign and must always be used when the prohibition is for both directions.  It is unusual for the sign to show only ‘No vehicles’, this is only appropriate where there is no access at all times such as a public footpath or wide footbridge that is wide enough for emergency vehicles. If this total ban applies to part of the day, a time period should be added to the plate.

A Play Street is indicated by a plate "Play Street Except for Access". It may also be used with the road marking ‘PLAY STREET’. Elsewhere, it may be used with either ‘No Vehicles’ on its own or with ‘except’ followed by:

• ‘buses’ (or ‘local buses’);
• ‘taxis’;
• the disabled badge holder symbol;
• ‘permit holder’ or ‘permit holders’ (with or without an identifier);
• one of—
  • ‘for access’
  • ‘for loading’
  • ‘for loading by’ plus the lorry symbol
  • ‘for access to off‑street premises’ or
• any appropriate combination of the above with ‘and’ or ‘&’ inserted before the last legend where more than one is used.

In addition, time periods may be added relating to the periods where access is restricted.
